Make your CV stand out from the crowd
These six steps will get your CV noticed. They may seem obvious, but many people don’t follow these basic steps. First impressions count. Employers scan C.V.’s in approximately 6-8 seconds so it must stand out in a clear and concise manner.
Follow these steps and your CV will stand out from the crowd:
1. Simplicity
“Less is best” is my motto when it comes to C.V. writing. There is no need for fancy text and graphics. Keep it simple. Use plain text that is easy to read. Important headings such as education, employment, achievements should be in bold and eye catching.
2. Personal profile
All C.V.’s should include a short personal profile directly under your personal details section. This should be no more than 6 sentences, short and effective. It should outline your career to date and career goals for the future. Spend time on this. It may be short but written well will make your potential employer want to read on.
3. Pay attention to the job description
Read the job description carefully and write your CV to match the qualities and skills required. This is important as it will let the employer see that you understand the job specification and that you are a suitable match. As a result, you are more likely to get called for interview.
4. Be honest
Tell the truth. There is nothing worse than someone writing something on their C.V., then to be asked about it at interview and unable to discuss further. Save yourself the anxiety and embarrassment by being honest from the beginning. Only include information that is factual and accurate.
5. Two A4 pages
It should be no more than two A4 pages, three pages maximum. It does not need to include every detail about your life. Include the important information that is relevant to the job that you are applying to. Use bullet points to present your information in an effective way rather than paragraphs. You want the words to be jumping off the page.
6. Proof- read
Get the basics right by checking spellings and grammar. First impressions count and it is vital that you proof- read it and make sure there are no mistakes. Spelling and grammar mistakes illustrate a “couldn’t care a less attitude” and won’t get you hired. An error-free C.V. demonstrates your professionalism and ability to pay close attention to detail.
